Korean Skincare Routine Order: The Full Step-by-Step

Woman doing her skincare routine at home

The Korean skincare routine order, thinnest to thickest, is: oil cleanse (PM), water cleanse, toner, essence, serum or ampoule, optional sheet mask, eye cream, moisturizer, then SPF in the morning or an occlusive at night. That is the full sequence — but you do not need every step. The order matters more than the number, and cleanse, moisturizer and daily SPF are the only steps that are truly non-negotiable.

#StepMorningEvening
1Oil cleanseYes (removes SPF/makeup)
2Water cleanseYes (or water)Yes
3TonerOptionalOptional

5Serum / ampouleOptionalOptional (treatments)

Read top to bottom. Skip any “optional” row your skin does not need — the steps that are marked yes are the backbone.

The one rule that runs the whole routine: thinnest to thickest

Apply products in order of texture, from most watery to most occlusive. Watery layers (toner, essence) need to absorb into skin; if you apply a rich cream first, it forms a barrier that blocks everything after it. So the sequence always climbs from liquid to lotion to cream to sunscreen or occlusive.

A practical test: if you can’t tell which of two products is “thinner,” the lighter, faster-absorbing one goes first. Let each layer sink in for roughly 30–60 seconds before the next.

Step by step

  1. Oil cleanse (PM only). First cleanse to dissolve sunscreen, makeup and sebum. Skip it in the morning.

  3. Toner. A hydrating, non-stripping toner to rebalance and prep skin for the next layers. K-beauty toners hydrate; they are not the astringent toners of the past.

  5. Serum or ampoule. Your targeted treatment — brightening, barrier repair, anti-aging. This is where actives like vitamin C (AM) or a retinoid (PM) live. Layer thinnest first if you use more than one.
  6. Sheet mask (optional). A PM treat a few times a week; pat in the leftover essence and carry on.
  7. Eye cream. A small amount around the orbital bone if you use one. Optional.
  8. Moisturizer. The step that seals hydration and feeds the barrier with ceramides and fatty acids. Use a lighter texture in the morning, a richer one at night.

  9. SPF (AM) or occlusive (PM). In the morning, broad-spectrum SPF50+ is always the final step. At night you can finish with an occlusive (a “slugging” layer) if your skin is very dry — otherwise stop at moisturizer.

The honest part: you can skip steps

A ten-step routine is a menu, not a requirement. Most people get excellent results from three or four steps, and overloading reactive skin with layers causes more problems than it solves. The non-negotiables are short:

Everything else — toner, essence, extra serums, masks, eye cream, occlusives — is an optional add-on you reach for when your skin has a specific need. If you have sensitive or reactive skin, fewer steps is usually the right answer; see our fragrance-free Korean routine for sensitive skin.

FAQ

What is the correct order for a Korean skincare routine?

Apply from thinnest to thickest: oil cleanse (PM only), water cleanse, toner, essence, serum or ampoule, sheet mask (optional), eye cream, moisturizer, then SPF in the morning or an occlusive at night. Not every step is mandatory — the order matters more than the count.

Do I really need all 10 steps?

No. The full sequence is a menu, not a checklist. A complete routine can be three or four steps: cleanse, moisturizer and daily SPF are the non-negotiables. Add essences, serums and masks only if your skin has a specific need for them.

What is the thinnest-to-thickest rule?

Apply products in order of texture, from most watery to most occlusive, so lightweight layers can absorb before heavier ones seal them in. Toners and essences go first, serums next, then cream, then SPF or an occlusive last. Thick creams applied early block what comes after.

What is the difference between the morning and evening routine?

Morning protects: lighter layers and sunscreen as the final step. Evening repairs: a double cleanse to remove SPF and grime, then your richer treatments and moisturizer, optionally sealed with an occlusive. The middle steps overlap; the ends differ.

What is the difference between an essence, a serum and an ampoule?

An essence is a lightweight, watery hydrating layer applied after toner. A serum is more concentrated and targets a specific concern. An ampoule is the most concentrated of the three, often used as a short booster. In the routine they layer essence, then serum or ampoule.

The bottom line

Go thinnest to thickest — oil cleanse, water cleanse, toner, essence, serum, mask, eye, moisturizer, then SPF or occlusive — and treat the optional steps as a menu. The order is what matters; the count is up to you. Lock in cleanse, moisturizer and daily SPF first, then add layers only as your skin asks for them.
